Learning Music Can Positively Transform Your Life
By Garry Norman
Learning to sing or to play a musical instrument could be a whole life enhancer!
Have you ever had the experience of being uplifted or calmed from listening to music? You might imagine singing with friends around a camp fire or humming a tune during a refreshing shower. My guess is that most will say, “well yes, of course!”. We use music to celebrate, to move us to dance, to make almost any occasion distinct and memorable. Music is revealing, where words can be obscuring, giving us a kind of primordial utterance for the being part of human being. As the famous Sufi musician, Inayat Khan, put it in his writings; “Music was the first language”.
Brain science and the impact of music on our brains and minds has been a focus of many studies recently. If you were to do a simple information search on the subject, you’d discover an enormous conversation. These studies have pointed towards many benefits from learning a musical instrument; social connection, pattern recognition and cognitive development, pain reduction, stress relief, memory enhancement, accelerating learning, and simply feeling good with more quality of life.
So for you as the reader, you could see this article as an invitation to greater functioning, joy and aliveness by taking up a musical instrument or learning to sing with enhanced freedom. If you have a concern that this is somehow not available to you, I invite you to notice when you walk, you walk in rhythm. When you talk, there is an up and down cadence and rhythm to speaking and listening. Your heart beats in rhythm. Rhythm, and on a subtler level, frequency, is fundamental to our being together in the world. Yes, I assure you, from my many years of leading bands, supporting students and facilitating The Mindful Music Seminar™, trust me, you can do it.
My offer to you and for your expanded well being is to join me. I am offering, what I like to call, Transformational Learning lessons in music.
